Alec Wilder (1907-1980) was one of the genuine, genius mavericks of 20th-century American music. The Alec Wilder Octet recorded some thirty sides of 78rpm records between 1938 and 1947, constituting one of the earliest sustained attempts to fuse jazz with classical music (later dubbed "Third Stream"). With the unique instrumentation of woodwinds, bass, drumset, and harpsichord, these quirky yet beguiling pieces were collected together in an early LP recording entitled, "Music for Lost Souls and Wounded Birds." We thus celebrate this American genius by organizing a concert around his creative voice, and thus "Go Wilder!"

The remainder of the concert is equally delightful, including atmospheric music for two clarinets and electronics as well as a wonderful work by Kevin Volans written for the Netherlands Wind Ensemble called Walking Song, featuring flute, harpsichord and 2 clappers. There is also a fantastic flute concerto featuring Carroll faculty Kristen Fenske, and a grand finale from Wilder's wild colleague, Leonard Bernstein.

About Us

The Wisconsin Wind Orchestra was established in 1995 and became the resident professional ensemble of Carroll University in 1998. The group features some of the finest musicians in southeast Wisconsin and is recognized as one of the only ensembles of its kind in the world.
The ensemble builds on the tradition of musical excellence found in major symphony orchestras, the innovation of wind groups such as the Eastman Wind Ensemble and Netherlands Wind Ensemble, and the technical versatility of the premier military bands.
