An intimate performance by the Wisconsin Wind Orchestra, the resident professional ensemble of Carroll University, will be at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, in the Humphrey Memorial Chapel, 238 N. East Ave., Waukesha. Tickets are on sale for $10 adults, $5 students and seniors 60 and older. Purchase at the door beginning at 7 p.m. on Jan. 28, or call the box office at 262.524.7633.
The art will be auctioned immediately following the concert, with proceeds to benefit the newly founded Greater Milwaukee El Sistema Orchestra at Hadfield Elementary School in Waukesha. El Sistema, or The System, is a Venezuelan approach to classical music education for disadvantaged children. Included on the program will be music for two antiphonal woodwind quintets, the “Andantino” from the Concerto No. 3 by Antonio Soler, the “Divertissement” by French composer Emile Bernard, “Dixtuor” by George Enescu, and a work by the well-known composer Darius Milhaud. |
The orchestra was founded and is conducted by Lawrence Dale Harper, professor of music. “Pairings,” is a reference to the ensemble’s instrumentation as a double woodwind quintet consisting of pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons and horns. Also “paired” on the program will be the closely related art forms of music and painting. Pacia Sallomi, associate professor of art, and local artist Ellie Nocun will create original works during the concert as they respond spontaneously to the sound, emotion and structure of the music.
