Wisconsin Wind Orchestra to perform at Carroll University

9/18/2012

The Wisconsin Wind Orchestra, the resident professional ensemble of Carroll University, will perform at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012. The concert will be held in the Humphrey Memorial Chapel, 238 N. East Ave. Tickets are $10 adults, $5 students and seniors 60 and older. Call the box office at 262.524.7633 or purchase tickets at the door starting at 3 p.m.
The orchestra is led by Lawrence Dale Harper, professor of music. The concert includes a performance of “Fratres” by Estonian composer Arvo Pӓrt, written in a tintinnabuli (Latin, meaning “bell”) style influenced by mystical experiences with chant music. This work has a slow and deeply meditative tempo, and a minimalist approach to both notation and performance.
The concert continues with “Suite Persane” (“Persian Suite”) by French composer André Caplet. The piece uses exotic Middle Eastern modes to create dark moods of striking beauty, and was probably inspired by Caplet’s visit to the Universal Exhibition held in Paris in 1900.
After an intermission, the orchestra will perform the famous “Siegfried Idyll” by German composer Richard Wagner. This piece was originally written for small chamber orchestra as a Christmas present to his wife Cosima to celebrate the birth of their child, Siegfried.

About Us

The Wisconsin Wind Orchestra was established in 1995 and became the resident professional ensemble of Carroll University in 1998. The group features some of the finest musicians in southeast Wisconsin and is recognized as one of the only ensembles of its kind in the world.
The ensemble builds on the tradition of musical excellence found in major symphony orchestras, the innovation of wind groups such as the Eastman Wind Ensemble and Netherlands Wind Ensemble, and the technical versatility of the premier military bands.
